Another new NFL season is underway and it will be a season like no other. The last season before a potential play lock-out (lets hope not). A capless season. We have untested rookies guaranteed millions of dollars, free agents cashing in on owners longing for a chance to get to the superbowl, new contracts for players currently under contract and players willing to sit out a season due salary disputes. Wouldn’t it be nice is we could all stay home because the person in the next office makes more money?

The play on the field is changing too. The Broncos spent a first round pick on Tim Tebow based on athletic ability. Is he a QB, RB or LB? The Broncos will find a way to get him onto the field each week, but he may never be a starting QB. With Roesthlisberger out for four games (apparently he still needs time to grow up and uncle Goodell does not approve) the Steelers opted for the fleet footed Dennis Dixon over the proven Charlie Batch. He may not be an accurate passer but he can run and is elusive. Michael Vick will see time a QB in every game for the Eagles this year. A Healthy Ronnie Brown will continue to lead the way in the NFLs version of the wild cat. The games plan college teams employ when they do not have a QB. Kick returners are not considered starting NFL players and command a salary for it. Special teams now win games and teams now spend as much time developing specials teams plays as they do on the offensive play book. And finally the role of the RB continue to confuse. Gone are the days of a RB getting 30 carries in a game. Now we share and give 2 RBs 15 carries each, but still pay them the starting RB salary. Jim Brown and Walter Peyton must cringe when they see these part time players riding the exercise bike on the sidelines.

It should be an interesting year.  Here are my pearls of wisdom for the season and week one;

Vikings @ Aints (I don’t care if you won a superbowl, it is still one of the best nick names ever):

Call me stubborn or old school, but the NFL should kick off on Sunday at 1:00 pm EST. Thursday night is for Desperate Housewives and Glee. Sundays are sacred. I refuse to acknowledge any Thursday NFL games that do not involve turkey, cranberries and a nap on the couch. I look forward to the 2010 season kick off on Sunday.

Miami @ Bills

The Bills shocked the football community when they opted to re-invent Chan Gailey instead of the tried and tested route of Bill Cowher or Mike Shanahan. Success in the college ranks has not translated into NFL success for Gailey. Will it be any different in Orchard Park? Gailey inherits and under performing team with potential. The key to any success trying to turn Trent Edwards into a starting QB and finding a o line that can give him time to find Lee Evans. The running game is solid with the addition of CJ Spiller. The bill had more pressing needs to address in the draft but opted for the game changer Spiller.

The Dolphins acquired there own game changer in Brandon Marshall, but how long will he be happy receiving balls from Chad Henne? This is a Parcells team. Sold running behind a good o line and a strong team defense.

Look for Spiller to set the tome for this game. If Dolphins D looses containment, Spiller will find the end zone at least once on long runs. Look for the Bills to use Jackson and Spiller to open things up for play action to Evans. It will not work every week, but this week it will be enough to beat the wild cat.

Miami 17 @ Bills 21

Lions @ Bears:

Will Mike Martz make a difference to Cutler? Can he teach Cutler that the NFL is not a shot put contest? The running game will be improved with Chester Taylor but the key is Matt Forte. If he can recover from the Sophomore slump, it will take pressure off of Cutler. The defense is very un-bears like. If Urlacher and Peppers can regain form, the Bears defense will be improved, but there are more then two positions on the defense.

The Lions are tough not to like. Jim Schwartz has quietly built a defense like he created in Tennessee. First round pick and defensive rookie of the year Suh and Vanden Bosch will keep the Lions in most games. Stafford had a solid first season and Calvin Johnson has been patiently waiting for a QB to play up to his level. Jahvid Best will be a nice compliment to Johnson and Stafford to give Lions fans a hope for the future.

The difference in this game will be the Lions defense. They will keep enough pressure on Cutler to keep the Bears honest. Look for the Lions to control the ball with Best and at least one big pass play to Johnson.

Lions 24 @ Bears 14

Colts @ Texans:

I am man enough to admit it. I am not a Colts fan. Yes, they are talented and yes Manning is one of the best at his position, but teams that cannot win graciously and run two minute offenses with a 21 point lead in the 4th quarter are just not the type of teams to have on your x-mas list. On the other hand you have to feel for the Texans. A team that comes up just short that could probably win any other division in the league. It is tough to imagine, but this game makes the Texans season. Winning this game will give them Jet like confidence, without the profanity. This game will be a shoot out. Either defense is solid, but these teams are just too talented offensively. Andre Johnson is the best WR in a game hands down. The return of Owen Daniels takes triple coverage away from Johnson with Arian Foster and Steve Slaton provide some 4th quarter ball contol to keep an unhappy Manning off of the field. Look for an upset here as the Texans set that stage for a season long battle with the Colts.

Colts 28 @ Texans 34

Broncos @ Jags:

The Broncos shipped Marshall off to Miami in the off season which leaves Eddie Royal as the teams top wide out. Rookie WR Demaryius Thomas has potential but the unstable play at QB could slow his development. The team is not sold on Knowshon Moreno at tail back and will opt for the RB by committee approach. The defense will miss Elvis Dumervil more than the team cares to admit. I will admit that it is intriguing to think of how the Broncos will get Tebow into the game. Maybe will see some wild cat out of the Broncos?

The Jags are intriguing in their own right. MJD is a work horse. Only on the only true full time RBs remaining in the league, good for 35 touches every game. The question that remains is whether or not Gerard is the Jags long term answer at QB. He has been solid but unspectacular.

I give the Jags the edge in this game based on a running game and defense. It will be a game between kickers with the advantage going to the home side.

Broncos 13 @ Jags 17

Bengals @ Pats:

There are very few people that are not interested in seeing TO and Ocho on the same filed at the same time. Not due to football prowess, but to see what happens when you put that much self absorbed, vanity driven hubris on the field at the same time. I am willing to wager that either player knows the score as they are too busy trying to upstage the other. Having said that, Carson Palmer has got be pleased to have two proven pass catchers again. Rookie Jermaine Greshman will surprise this year as an outlet to Palmer. Benson will have more room to run this year to give the Bengal more balance on offense. The strength of the defense is at LB with Maualuga and Rivers keeping other teams honest.

The Pats are set with Brady, Moss and Welker but their lack of commitment to a running game and an unspectacular defense force the Pats to outscore other teams. The Maroney is still listed as the starting RB, however the Pats have clearly given up on the player, and Maroney has not put up much of a fight. The Pats secondary is injury ridden and weak and will struggle to contain Tocho (I guarantee this name will catch on).

Bengals 24 @ Pats 20

Carolina @ Giants:

Carolina tests the theory that you do not need a QB to win, if you have two top 10 RBs. Matt Moore starts at QB, but it is only a matter of time before we get to see Jimmy Clausen take over. For some reason Clausen fell in the draft. Maybe we will soon find out why. Nothing has changed for Steve Smith. Still no other receiving option on the team. Imagine Tocho or Moss remaining on this team like Smith has. The team lives and dies by the running game. Williams and Stewart could start for any team and are good for 1000 yards and 5 tds each this year. The defense struggled last year and nothing was done in the off season to address this.

The Giants are polar opposites to the Panthers on offense. Jacobs is an anomaly. A 265 RB that dances like Justin Timberlake and goes down like an Italian soccer player. Bradshaw takes over at RB, but the Giants relay on the pass to set up the run. The other Steve Smith and Nicks and Manningham provide the other Manning with many options, The line is solid and manages to keep Manning upright. However, when you starting QB is prone to plantar fasciitis, keeping him upright is the least of your problems. Keeping out of size 13 pumps could be an issue.

The Giants defense will be the difference maker in this game with the line containing the Panthers running game.

Carolina 17@ Giants 28

Falcons @ Steelers:

Dennis Dixon gets the opportunity he has been waiting for. He has four games to give the Steelers something to think about. Holmes is gone, to another team and for four games. Ward remains with the exciting Mike Wallace on the other side. Wallace was a pleasant surprise in the return game and as a long option last year, so much so that Holmes was deemed expendable. The Steelers are sold at RB with Mendenhall and 3rd down back Moore. The defense returns intact with a healthy Polamalu, the teams best player. Dixon will be given every opportunity not to loose the next 4 games.

The Falcons Turner looks to rebound from an injury riddled 2009. The Falcons rely heavily on Turner. Matt Ryan, Roddy White and Gonzalez provide a spark, but Turner is the key to success. The defense is older but tends to keep the Falcons in most games.

If this were not the Steelers home opener, the Falcons could win this game. Like in most close games, Polamalu will be the difference maker. The team will rally around Dixon and keep this game close enough to win.

Falcons 21 @ Steelers 24

Browns @ Bucs:

It sounds strange but this blacked out game could be the most entertaining of week 1. Both clubs are rebuilding and look to reap the benefits of a top pick 5 in the 2011 draft.

The Browns bring in Delhomme after the casting off Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. They hope to expand Cribbs’ role from a kick returner to a full time WR. If it works, the Browns could surprise. However, playing in a division with the Bengals, Ravens and Steelers is not an enviable situation.

Tampa Bay has gone the youth route. Josh Freeman is the franchise. The Bucs start two rookies WRs in Benn and Mike Williams. Although Benn was drafted 2 rounds ahead of Williams, the later is the most NFL ready. There will be times of excitement and times of frustration. Winslow will prove an effective outlet for Freeman. Carnell Williams pulls the caddy out of the garage after re-building the engine for a third time. With the departure of Ward, Cadillac is the unquestioned started.

With a lack of defense on either team, this will be a whoever has the ball last type game. I look for Harrison to have his best game of the season at RB for the Browns.

Browns 31 @ Bucs 28

Oakland @ Titans:

The pressure is on Vince Young and Johnson and repeat the 2nd have of last season. Johnson is out to prove that he is the top back in the League and Young is trying to convince everyone that he is the next Steve McNair. Surprisingly the Titans success will not rest on these two players. Kenny Britt needs to develop as a top WR option and the defense needs to return to Titans form. If the Titans fall behind early, you cannot run your way to victory. The Titans D needs to hold teams like the Texans and Colts to allow Young and Johnson to control the clock.

The Raiders seemed to have made solid draft choices and brought in a solid Jason Campbell at QB. They are set a RB with Mcfadden and Bush and have potential at WR. The question is with the line and the protection required to give Campbell time. The defense is underestimated with Seymour, rookie McClain and corner Asomugha give the Raiders the makings of a solid D.

This is a tough game to call. As much as like the Titans and Johnson, I think a late Janikowski field goal is the difference maker. After all they spent a 1st pick on him, so he has to contribute at some time.

Oakland 17@ Titans 14

Packers @ Philly:

This will be a great game to watch. Rodgers has allowed the city of Green Bay to forget Farve. Arguably, Rodgers will be considered in the Manning, Brady category by mid season. Greg Jennings should look to improve on his TD total from last season and Jermichael Finley will be a household name as a top TE and should see his first pro bowl. Grant is a solid option at RB, but the Pack would be better served with an upgrade at this position. The Defense plays a great 3-4 that causes fits for offensive lines. The weakness on this time is in pass protection. If they can keep Rodgers upright this year, look for the Pack to play deep into January.

The Eagles have moved in a new direction, but the result may be the same. In relief of McNabb last season, Kolb proved he was worthy of a chance at the starting job. Kolb has weapons in Jackson, Celek and Maclin with a line that will give him time to throw. McCoy is the unquestioned starter at RB with Westbrook on the left coast. McCoy had an average rookie campaign, but he will need to step it up to make the Philly offence complete. The defense still remains a strength for the Eagles and that will not change this year.

If the Eagles line give Kolb time, look for this to be a high scoring game. However, Rodgers experience will be the difference as a late TD to Finley will deal the Eagles their first loss of the season.

Packers 34 @ Philly 28

Cards @ Rams:

I feel for Steven Jackson. A good back on a very, very bad team. Enough said.

The Cards will miss Warner and Boldin this year. If Derek Anderson could not retain the QB role in Cleveland, I would not trust him as a QB in the desert. The Cards start the season without Beanie Wells and Breaston playing opposite Fitzgerald. The defense will miss Karlos Danby and Porter has too much tread to be make a contribution on defense. The 2009 Cards defense reaped the benefit of an offense scoring 30 points each week. They will not have the same luxury this year and will struggle.

I do not expect much from the Cards this year, but I expect less from the Lambs.

Cards 21 @ Rams 0

49ers @ Seattle:

Alex Smith will solidify himself as a starting QB in San Fran this year. A full year with Crabtree and the return of Davis at TE, combined with Frank Gore and Anthony Dixon running, will ensure Smith’s success. The defense will be one of the best in the NFL this season as Singletary makes a defense in his image.

Seattle will struggle this year. Pete Caroll is trying to put his stamp on this team, but it will take a few years to turn this around. No solid starters at RB or WR make a solid o line pointless. You can have all day to throw but if your WRs can’t catch a cold, you may as well just hand the ball off. However, you only have back up RBs to hand the ball off to. The defense will keep games close, however look for Olindo Mare to be the only fantasy option in Seattle this year.

49ers 21 @ Seattle 3

Dallas @ Redskins:

Nothing better than a division rivalry to kick off the season. The Cowboys awarded Miles Austin with a big raise, based on an 8 game resume. A huge chance in my opinion. The o line is questionable and Romo is not one to win a game on his own. It is never good when you do not know who you starting RB is. Neither Barber or Jones are starters. The defense is the strength of the team. The will get to the QB this year and the corners will help contain the long ball.

The Redskins upgraded the QB position by bringing in McNabb, his mom and a can of chunky soup. Maybe the change of scenery will be good for McNabb? Maybe Moss will be happy with the upgrade at QB? Maybe Portis will be rejuvenated by the reunion with Shanahan? Maybe Shanahan and Haynesworth will kiss and make up? It is too many maybe this early in the season to expect a win.

Dallas 24 @ Redskins 14

Ravens @ Jets:

The Jets played over there heads last year. The play off win in San Diego was a Charger collapse not a Jet win. One 50 yard run (the reason Cromartie was traded) and 3 missed field goals and you escape with a 3 point play off win. The Jets will come down to earth this year. The o line will give running lanes for Greene and Tomlinson (look for LT to be the starter by week 4) and Holmes come back from suspension in week 5. The defense will be one of the best, like any Ryan family defense but the rate limiting factor will be at QB. Sanchez had a better then expected first year, but a tougher schedule in 2010 will pose a challenge and Jets will miss the play offs.

The Ravens mean business. Bringing on Boldin and Houshmandzedah gives Flaco receiving options to go with a top running game. Look that the o line to over power d lines and makes holes for Rice and Mcgahee. The best d line in the league will provide the Ravens with early leads which will lead to clock rotting running in the 2nd have. Not pretty but it will get them deep into January.

Ravens 21 @ Jets 9

Chargers @ KC:

Much has been made of the Chargers management of the Jackson and McNiel holdouts. In my opinion, it is refreshing to see a team not allow players to hold them for ransom. Too many players and teams are not committed to the long term and the team concept. They will miss Jackson and McNeil, but not as much as those too players will miss an NFL season.

Rivers will be fine without Jackson. I expect Malcom Floyd to step into Jackson spot just fine. A healthy Gates a rookie RB and Sproles to give Rivers enough options to win. McNeil will be harder to replace but key free agent signings will help. The defense will be improved in 2010 with the return of Merrimen in a contract year and rookie Cam Thomas taking over at the NT spot in the 3-4.

The Chiefs need Matt Cassel to take the next step this year. The o line is improved and the RB position could be one of the best with Charles, Jones and rookie Dexter Mcluster. Mcluster can run, catch and return kicks in the mold of Sproles. Bowe and Chamber return at WR. The under performing defense has more talent then results. It also has to improve for the Chiefs to get into the win column.

Chargers 24 @ KC 14

That is how I see this young season and week one panning out. I would be right, I could be wrong. Only time will tell.

We are the mid point of the NFL season after what has been an unpredictable September and October. The reduced role of Running Back (very few backs reach the 100 yard plateau each week), the uncertainty at QB for a few teams and the disparity between the top teams and the lesser teams have made for an unexpected season. No one would have guessed that the Titans would be winless at this point. No one would have guessed that a game can be won by a QB only completing two passes for 23 yards, on a sunny in October. The second half of the season looks to be just as unpredictable, although it does make for good TV.

First Half Awards:

Top QB – Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers

Manning is having a hall of fame season throwing for 1800 yards, 15 TDs and only 4 ints. However the Colts arguably have the leagues softest schedule and you really have to look at the first half opponents before handing Manning the top QB award. The Colts opponents are a combined 11 and 26 this year. After a closer look at the stats you will also see the Colts are 27th in league rushing attempting to run the ball only 144 times. Manning has attempted 215 passes, putting the Colts first in passing. It is also interesting to note that despite an average 4th quarter lead of 15 points, no other QB than Manning has taken a snap. Padding of stats diminishes what Manning has accomplished.

Rivers has thrown for just under 1800 yards, 10 TDs and 3 ints in 6 games. However, the Chargers opponents are a combined 19 and 20 including games against Baltimore, Denver and Pittsburgh who are a combined 14 and 7. Rivers ability to keep the Chargers in these tough games gives him the edge over Manning as top QB at the mid point of the season.

Top RB – Cedric Benson

Benson’s 720 yards tops Adrian Petersen by 50 yards at the mid-point of the season. However, it is more than the yards that makes Benson the top RB. The Bengals have become a run first team that relies on Benson to manage the clock and come through in the 4th quarter. Not other RB has been able to accomplish this in 2009.

Top WR – Andre Johnson

Johnson tops all NFL wideouts with 634 yards to go along with 4 tds after 7 games. What sets Johnson apart is his ability to beat double coverage week in week out and produce when the 4 and 3 Texans need it most.

Top TE – Owen Daniels

Vernon Davis has come on of late with a 3 TD game in week 7, but Daniels has been the most consistent average 70 yards per game on his way to a league leading 497 yards. He has also hauled in 5 tds over 7 weeks. Daniels has become the number 2 receiving threat opposite Andre Johnson.

On to my week 8 predictions.

Texans @ Bills:

It is getting to that time of year when weather becomes a factor in games, especially at Roche Stadium with the swirling winds off of Lake Erie. Weather should impact this game. The bills have some new found life under Ryan Fitzpatrick, but it is defense that has come to life. The Bills can only hope that the weather can slow down Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and the Texans. The Texans are quietly becoming an offensive force and have re-discovered a running game behind Steve Slaton who seems to have returned to form. The Texans will need Slaton to keep drives alive if the weather impacts the passing game.

Texans 21 Bills 17

Fantasy Thoughts:

Schaub, Johnson and Slaton are starts this week. Lynch is a sleeper as he improves each week following his 3 game suspension. Fitzpatrick can managed a game, but not win one. I would bench him along with any Bills WR for the duration.

Browns @ Bears:

The Bears learned to regret the dumping of Benson last week as the disgruntled ex-Bear got the best revenge by rushing for almost 200 yards against a disappointing Bears team. In comes the practice squad like Browns. The Browns make the Bears look like super bowl contenders. The Browns cannot pass, catch or run the ball. You need to do more than punt to win football games. Look for the Bears to take out some frustration on the Browns on what could be a blow out.

Browns 3 Bears 28

Fantasy Thoughts:

Bears fans are a strange bunch. The run Rx Grossman out of town due to his ability to pass the ball to the other team. However the have their Franchise QB in Cutler who is on track to throw 25 ints this year. To me the only difference between Cutler and Grossman is about 40 million dollars and an attitude. However, Cutler is a likely to off set his ints with TDs this week and is a recommended start in week 8. Forte has been a disappointment this year but should have room to run against a field hockey like defense. Johnny Knox in the return game and Hester in the passing game are potentials sleepers. The Bears defense is a must start.

Seahawks @ Cowboys:

Which Seattle team in going to show up? The team that blanked the Jaguars or the one that managed a meager field goal against Arizona? Which Romo is going to show up? In his three years as a starter Romo is 5 and 10 in December and win less January. The knock on Romo is that he cannot win the important games. It is not quite at that point in the season, but with the Giants having a one game lead and the 4 and 2 Eagles squaring off against the Giants this week, the pressure is on Romo to win this game. If I were Jerry Jones, let’s face it we all know he is the real coach, I would lean on Marion Barber, Felix Jones and the Cowboys pass rush to win this game. Don’t let Romo loose it for you.

Seahawks 20 Cowboys 24

Fantasy Thoughts:

Barber and Jones are starts this week with Jones getting the yards and Barber getting the goal line carries. With the arrival of Miles Austin, both he and Romo are a bye week starters. On the Seahawks side of the ball, Hasselbeck is also a bye week starter. The loss of Walter Jones cannot be understated. If Hasselbeck has time he should find Houshmandzadeh and Burleson. If the pass rush gets to him early, the lack of a run game will make it a long day for the Seahawks.

Rams @ Lions:

This is the dog of the week. 0 and 7 versus 1 and 5. These teams are evenly matched; however the game will be decided by each team’s best players, Steven Jackson and Calvin Johnson. If Johnson is able to play I give the rested Lions the edge at home. Jackson will keep it close but at some time Bulger has to throw which is a scary prospect.

Rams 10 Lions 14

Fantasy Thoughts:

Jackson is coming along on a horrid team. His numbers are respectable but he has yet to find the end zone. That should change this week. He is a good bye week starter. Johnson is a must start each week. When healthy no one can cover him. He has only scored one this year but if both Johnson and Stafford can go this week, Megatron should score. Kevin Smith is a sleeper this week against an very week Rams run D.

Vikings @ Packers:

This is a game of week as Farve returns to the soon to be frozen tundra. It is also the second of two divisional match-ups between the 6 and 1 Vikings and the 4 and 2 Pack. Personally, the media has blown the Farve vs Green Bay topic out of proportion. Must be a slow news week. Farve or the Flu. Take you pick. Green Bay has their franchise QB in Rodgers and his 11 tds and 2 ints. Farve brought the Super bowl home, but Rodgers will do the same, just with less flare. Like the first game Rodgers will keep this game close but I look for Adrian Petersen to play a larger role and move the Vikings to 7 and 1.

Vikings 24 Packers 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

Farve, Rodgers, Petersen and Sidney Rice are must starts. Donald Driver has been the best Green Bay WR this season with Greg Jennings performing a disappearing act during most games. Jennings is a bye week starter at best. James Jones is a Sleeper catching 2 td passes in as many games. Percy Harvin is likely to find the end zone on special teams and is also a sleeper this week.

Jags @ Titans:

I am not ready to give up on the Titans. They are too talented a team to dwell along with the Lambs and Brownies. The Titans will move to Vince Young, rookie of the year Vince Young, incase any forgot, who will be playing for his NFL career. If Young cannot prove that the Titans are his team against the beatable Jags, he should consider selling insurance or playing for the Raiders. The Titans will lean heavily on Johnson and White to run the ball against a surprisingly weak Jags defense, which is probably making Jack Del Rio want to put the uniform back on. The Jags will try to exploit the Titans defense with a heavy dose of MJD and play action passes to Sims-Walker. This will be close but I am giving the edge to the rested and well over do Titans.

Jags 17 Titans 20

Fantasy Thoughts:

This will be a battle of the RBs. Both Johnson and MJD are must starts. Gerrard will have enough time to throw and may find the end zone by foot or air. We sometimes forget that Gerrard is a mobile QB, when he starts throwing for 300 yards. Sims-Walker is a starter at WR, but I cannot see any starters on the Titans side. They have young talent in Kenny Britt, but not this week. Young is a bye week sleeper this week is an emotional win for the Titans.

49ers @ Colts:

The Colts have been on an offensive tear this season and it is hard to imagine them loosing. However in games against the Jags and Dolphins, the result could have been different. I don’t think this is the week, but I expect the Colts to get a dose of reality in the next 4 games as they face the Texans twice, New England and Baltimore. However, Alex Smith will not have the 2nd half heroics to pull this one out.

49ers 20 Colts 35

Fantasy Thoughts:

Manning will pass, and pass, and pass regardless of the score or how much time is left on the clock. I will also pay anyone good money who can name Peyton’s back-up. Manning is a fantasy study and should be started each week. Wayne and Clark reap the benefit of Manning’s passes and are also a weekly starts. Austin Collie is a sleeper as Wayne and Clark need to catch their breath on occasion. There is nothing wrong with the Colts RB, but they simply do not run the ball enough to warrant a fantasy start. Vernon Davis should be good fantasy points as the 49ers will fall behind early and be forced to play catch-up. A healthy and well rested Gore is a sleeper against an overrated Colts defense. It is easier to play defense with a 20 point lead.

Dolphins @ Jets:

Dolphins vs Jets games are always entertaining. Both teams play a similar style, relaying on a solid run game a team defense. With Henne at QB, the Wildcat is not as effective. The play action pass was much more effective with Pennington. Look for Henne to be forced to throw which plays into the strength of the Jets. One offense the Jets will benefit from the return of Jerricho Cotchery, who quickly developed a rapport with Sanchez. The emergence of Shonn Greene will give the Jets what they did not have in the week 5 loss to the Fish.

Fish 23 Jets 27

Fantasy Thoughts:

Thomas Jones has broken out the past few weeks and should be started again this week. However, the running of Shonn Greene in week 7 was not a fluke. The Jets gave away draft to take him in the 2nd round for a reason. Expect the larger, tougher Greene to steal goal line carries and see his production grow as the season progresses. Greene is likely to find the end zone this week and is an effective bye week starter. Cotchery should have a good game after missing the last few weeks due to injury. Edwards is a too much of a risk after his latest off field entanglements. Both Brown and Williams are starters for the Dolphins but I expect Henne to struggle with out a true number one WR.

Giants @ Eagles:

This is a classic match-up of two teams and cities that just do not like each other. The other Manning has struggled of late. Some may say it is the heel injury, but last time I checked you do not throw with your foot. I think teams playing up to the Giants level and the lack of a dominating run game (still can’t figure out how a 260 lbs RB goes down after first contact. 5’6’’, 185 lb Darren Sproles breaks more tackles than Jaccobs.) that has put pressure on Eli to win games with his arm, something little brother cannot do.

Giants 21 Eagles 28

Fantasy Thoughts:

Manning may struggle against the Eagles pass rush and secondary, however consider the shortage of QBs during bye weeks, you may not have a choice to start Eli. Ahmad Bradshaw should continue to prove that he is an every down back. Steve Smith has been quiet and this will continue against the Eagles. Hakeem Nicks has scored in 4 consecutive weeks and I expect him make a few big plays and find the end zone again this week. On the Eagles side, Mcnabb has been unspectacular, but as with Manning you probably don’t have a choice to start chunky soup boy. After a steady first half of the season, this will be a coming out party for Leshon Mcoy. Mcoy is as good a receiver as Westbrook but he is much tougher between the tackles. Look for Mcoy to pace the Eagles and gain yardage in the 2nd half against a tired Giants D. Deshaun Jackson is a must start based on explosiveness alone. Jeremy Maclin has taken over the starting WR spot opposite Jackson. Maclin is equally explosive and is a sleeper this week.

Panthers @ Cardinals:

The Cards have re-discovered the defense that got them to the Super Bowl in 2008. The win against the Giants was impressive and the winning should continue against the struggling and frustrated Panthers. I am not sure why John Fox is sticking with Delhomme. The starting QB has thrown 26 ints in the last 15 games, including 7 multiple int games. There must be something that Fox is seeing in practice to not make the switch to Feely or Matt Moore. There is no reason to believe that Delhommes struggles will not continue against the Cards, who have intercepted 7 passes this year. This is as frustration as the team has a solid RB tandem, and a pro bowl WR in Steve Smith. Most teams would thrive with this type of talent. The Panther defense has lost some of its swagger as they can no longer pressure the QB or stop the run. Warner should have a field day waiting for Fitzgerald, Boldin and Breston run their routes, as this is how much time Warner will have.

Panthers 17 Cards 42

Fantasy Thoughts:

Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin are must starts. It is hard to bench Smith, but he has not found the end zone and will continue to struggle until there is improvement at the QB positions. There has been much fantasy talk of Beanie Wells, but until the Cards commit to the run, he is bench material.

Raiders @ Chargers:

The Chargers defense played will the urgency that they need to climb back into the play off race. The defense has been the problem with the Chargers this season as they can score points at will. Rivers is having another pro bowl season, more than making up for the Chargers lack of a run game. Tomlinson seems to be getting healthy, but he is not the back he once was. The best thing the Chargers can do is get LT and Sproles on the field at the same time. Although he is not an every down back, Sproles is the threat that LT once was, and you don’t pay someone $ 6 million to warm the bench. There is nothing to say about the Raiders. Yes they beat the Eagles in a strange game and played the Chargers close in week one, but this team needs help in too many areas to compete. This game will be over early, so lets hope it is not televised.

Raiders 9 Chargers 35

Fantasy Thoughts:

Rivers, Jackson and Gates are must starts. LT should return to fantasy prominence this week along with Sproles who will get second half carries and yardage in the return game. Nate Keading is having a pro bowl season in the kicking game and is a start this week. The Chargers defense is a start this week against an inept Raiders offense.

Broncos @ Ravens:

This game is a tough one to predict. Despite the 6 and 0 record, I am not sold on the Broncos. They have not dominated one team this year and just as easily be 3 and 3. The Ravens at 3 and 3 could just as easily be 6 and 0. I think this game will come down to location. The Ravens have the edge at home and are lead by an improving Joe Flaco. The run game is solid behind Ray Rice who is excelling in the run and pass game. The Broncos rely on Brandon Marshall and Knowshon Moreno to control the game for the mistake free Kyle Orton. Who would have thought that the Broncos got the better QB in the Cutler deal.

Broncos 17 Ravens 20

Fantasy Thoughts:

Flaco and Ray Rice will have solid fantasy games. It is hard to predict who will catch the ball for the Ravens, so stay away from the WRs. Although impressive in his rookie year, Moreno may struggle against the Ravens D. Marshall should have a few big plays and should find the end zone as the Broncos will play from behind. Both kickers should play a prominent role in this game.

Those are my thoughts on week 8.

It is week 6 already and the trade deadline is fast approaching. Big name players I expect to be moved; Steven Jackson (too much value for a team needing as many top draft picks in 2010. Tim Teabow will make an interesting Lam), Shawne Merriman (in a contract year the Chargers cannot afford to loose Merriman and get nothing in return), Michael Vick (with the emergence of Kevin Kolb the Vick experiment is short lived), Terrell Owens (Owens is wasted in Buffalo. He is too talented and the Bills need to re-build. Owens’ talent is wasted in Rich Stadium and he needs to move on) and Thomas Jones (Jones is the third best RB in New York and was vocal about a new contract in the off season. The emergence of Leon Washington makes this a no-brainer). The NFL trade deadline is the least exciting of the professional sport, but I expect this coming Tuesday produce some surprising results.

As far as my ability to predict game results. Still batting .500. However, I have officially written off the Bills (the opposing QB goes 2 – 17 and still wins!!!), believe the Broncos have a few more horseshoes hidden in unmentionable places, cannot figure out the Jags or 49ers and feel the Chiefs were robbed. Let’s see how I do in week 6.

Bears @ Falcons:

The Falcons surprised a few people last week, making the 49ers look like, well the 49ers. Michael Turner reminded us that he is a top fantasy RB and Matt Ryan is nicely avoiding the sophomore slump. The Bears beat up on the Lions, but still allowed the score 24 points without Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Chicago no longer means defense, and Cutler is unpredictable with a group of questionable WRs. This will be a close one but look for Michael Turner to be the difference.

Bears 17 Falcons 24

Fantasy Thoughts:

Ryan, White and Tuner are must starts for the Falcons. For the Bears Cutler is a risk but a bye week starter and Forte may struggle against the Falcons underrated Defense.

Texans @ Bengals:

While I will admit I did not expect the Bengals to sit at 4 -1 after 5 weeks, but I still not sold on them. Like the Broncos, close wins are not too convincing. A call or two going the other way and the Bengals could be 1 – 4. The Texans are a disappointment team this year. The offense is still there but they have taken a step back on the defensive side of the ball. This could turn out to be the best game of the week with it coming down to the wire. The difference this week will be Andre Johnson with some 4th quarter theatrics.

Texans 28 Bengals 24

Fantasy Thoughts:

Palmer, Bensen are starters. Palmer is spreading the ball around too much to count on any Bungle WR, but Chad Johnson is an effective bye week replacement. Schaub and Andre Johnson are starters each week. Jacoby Jones continues to excel in the return game and with Kevin Walter battling a gimp hammy, should see more action as a deep WR threat. Steve Slaton continues to disappoint and should be traded before everyone figures out that he is a one year wonder.

Lions @ Packers:

The Lions are exciting and I don’t think anyone wants to see them loose, however with an ailing Johnson the Cats loose their only offensive threat. The Packers are living up to their preseason promise and are starting to find balance on offense and defense. Rodgers is efficient and has a new weapon on Jermichael Finely. The Packers are too much for the Lions. Expect this game to be over at the half.

Lions 10 Packer 28

Fantasy Thoughts:

Rodgers and Driver are starts in this game. Greg Jennings has been a let down, but he may recover in this game. Jermicheal Finley is a gem is leagues that feature TEs. The Packer Defense is also a start this week. On the Lions side of the ball even is Stafford and Johnson play, I recommend avoiding them this week, unless you are in bye week trouble.

Eagles @ Raiders:

The annual decline of the Raiders continues. I am not sure how long the Raiders intend on staying with Russell at QB, but is clearly a player that is not interested in being in Oakland. Russell needs time on the bench to learn. Without McFadden, the Raiders are predictable and, well boring. If it were not for Al Davis, you could almost feel sorry for this team. The Eagles continue to improve. Don’t read too much into Jeremy Maclin. Week 5 was a breakout game, but there are two many weapons in Philly to count Maclin as a top WR.

Eagles 42 Raiders 3

Fantasy Thoughts:

Mcnabb is a start, but expect the Eagles to take an early lead. Mcnabb may not see much time in the 2nd half and the Eagles are waiting to see more of Kevin Kolb. DeSean Jackson is a start with Maclin as a bye week starter. Westbrook does not have much gas left in the tank, and McCoy is too talented to keep on the bench. Look for McCoy to get the bulk of the carries making him a great flex starter from here on out. The Eagles D is a must start this week, with the potential to pitch a shut out.

Ravens @ Vikings:

This game is a test for both teams. Flaco struggled against the Bengals and that may continue this week against the Vikings pass rush and secondary. The run game will be the difference. Petersen has only asserted himself against the Browns earlier this year. He needs to take this game over for the Vikings to move to 6 – 0. Farve can manage the game, but without Percy Harvin in the return and passing game the Vikings may have to lean on the run. This will be a great game. I look for Petersen to exploit and overrated Raven run defense and be the difference maker.

Ravens 21 Vikings 24

Fantasy Thoughts:

Ray Rice and Petersen are starters this week. Rice is a weapon in the run and passing attack. Farve is a starter, but don’t expect a 300 yard game. The WRs on either team are too inconsistent to warrant a start.

Titans @ Pats:

The Titans miss Albert Haynesworth as much as the Chargers miss Jamal Williams. The DT role is underestimated in the NFL, but is proven each year when these players go down or leave town, the defense struggles. This is Kerry Collins last stand. If he struggles early, look for Young to take the field, for good. The Pats are hard to figure. All of the offensive weapons are there, yes, they lost Seymour to the Raiders, but the defense is lacking something. I am picking this as my upset special of the week. The Titans will get back to basics and run Johnson and the Tequilaless Ledale White to a close win going into the bye week. A late 54 yarder by Bironas field goal gives the Titans there first win of the year.

Titans 23 Giants 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

Brady is a weekly starter and it is hard to bench Moss, but look for Randy’s recent struggles to continue. Welker will have a big game in between the 20’s but will not find the end zone. Johnson is a must start for the Titans with White finding the end zone at least once have sleeper potential. Bironas is a starter at PK this week a few long ones.

Giants @ Saints:

Thankfully there was little talk of the manning injury this week. The football equivalent to splinter should not be spoken of. I look for the Giants to bring the Saints down to reality. You need toughness to win in the NFL. The Saints are talented but the defense does not fear not scare anyone. The Giants two headed running attack (Bradshaw remains the better runner and should get the bulk of the carries) and Manning / Smith combination will be too much for the Aints.

Giant 24 Saints 14

Fantasy Thoughts:

Manning, Smith and Bradshaw are starters. Look for Jacobs’s role to decline as the enigma of the 260 lbs RB avoiding a hit rides the bench. Brees will hit Colston in the end zone this week, but Pierre Thomas and Bush will struggle. The Giants D is a start this week, forcing a few turnovers.

Bills @ Jets:

This may be Dick Juron’s last game. The week 5 contest versus Cleveland was nothing short of embarrassing. A team completes 2 passes and wins? A team featuring TO, Lee Evans and Marshawn Lynch cannot find the end zone? It is unfortunate but sometimes we have to point a finger at the coaching staff. I wonder what Mike Shanahan and Marty Schottenheimer are doing this weekend? The Jets are reeling after a tough loss to the Fish and will look to erase that memory by beating up on the Bills.

Bills 6 Jets 34

Fantasy Thoughts:

Thomas Jones has struggled and it is time to pass the RB torch to Leon Washington. Shon Greene has shown some flashes and should see more of the field. Washington is a start this week. As much as I hate to admit it, Braylon Edwards should be a fantasy starter this week. I don’t care much for players that choose to play when they want it suits them. Sanshez is a bye week starter, but he will out up pedestrian numbers as the Jets rely on the run. The Jets D is a must start with the potential for a defensive score and multiple turn0vers. Stay away from any Bills, even TO in what could be the last game of his short lived career at Rich Stadium. Imagine what Jim Kelly could have done with TO? Would have had at least one ring. It is a crying shame.

Browns @ Steelers:

Anderson went 2 – 17 last week. He may go 0 – 17 this week. This contest may be over in the first quarter. At least Edwards was a decoy in Cleveland, but with Braylon moving the dropsy’s to New York, the Browns have nothing on offence. They have effectively surpassed the Lams and Raiders as the worst team in the NFL. At least they can’t go 0 – 16. The glass is half full. Well, maybe a quarter full. The Steelers will dominate this game early. Mendenhall will have lots of room to run and Roethlisberger will a field day passing without any threat of a pass rush. The Steelers defense will do it’s best to ensure that the Browns do not cross the 50 yard line.

Browns 0 Steelers 42

Fantasy Thoughts:

Roethlisberger is a must start, but he may not see much time in the second half. This is not the Colts. Smart teams rest their franchise QB when the game gets out of hand. Tomlin knows how important his QB is and the Banquet Berger does not care much for stats. Mendenhall, Ward and Santonio Holmes are starts this week. The Steelers D is a must start. I recommend a side pool in your fantasy word. Any member of your pool that starts a Brown or Raider this year is open for long term mocking.

Cards @ Seahawks:

This will be an interesting game. Which Seattle team will show up? The one that blanked the Jags and Lams or the one that was embarrassed by the 49ers? In any case the Cards offense is potent, but each week I wait for Warner do go down. With Hasselbeck in the line up the Seahawks can keep pace with the Cards. Neither team has a running game to speak of (which is a shame for Beanie Wells, who deserves better) but the Hawks have the edge on defense. Look for a late Burleson TD to put the Hawks over the top.

Cards 31 Cards 35

Fantasy Thoughts:

Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin are must starts. Hasselbeck, Burleson and Houshmandzadeh are starts. Avoid the running game on either side; however Hightower is sleeper in the passing game.

Panthers @ Yukaneers:

The Bucs are trying but are missing players at a few positions to be competitive. Josh Johnson is an exciting player and should only improve as each week passes. Winslow is benefiting from Johnson’s development and a healthy Antonio Bryant can only help. Much is expected from the Panthers as we wait for the running game to produce and open up room for Steve Smith. This game could go either way, but the Bucs defense will struggle to contain Steve Smith, who is out to prove that he is the best Steve Smith in football.

Panthers 28 Bucs 17

Fantasy Thoughts:

Steve Smith is a must start in this game. Johnson gains yards in the air and on the ground which makes him an effective bye week starter. Delhomme is a good replacement QB this week as he looks to avoid costly turnovers. Jonathon Stewart is looking like the long term solution at RB that the Panthers need to re-build their team around. He is a sleeper this week as he will get the goal line carries. Diangelo Williams is trade bait. Try to ship him off in return for a player with more of an up side. Winslow and Cadillac Williams are sleepers this week. Williams is a nice surprise and is by far the Bucs best RB. Hopefully his knees will hold up.

Chiefs @ Redskins:

The Chiefs were robbed last week in a disappointing loss to the Cowboys. If not for two defensive errors that allowed Myles Austin to pull two long TD passes, the Chiefs outplayed America’s Team in every aspect of the game. I look for the Chiefs to improve against the Skins at are continuing along the road of high priced mediocrity. Portis has too many miles on his young body and Campbell is not the answer at QB, which is a shame for talent like Santana Moss and Chris Cooley. The torch is passed this week from Larry Johnson to Jamal Charles as the Chiefs control the clock to a fourth quarter win capped of by a late Campbell turnover.

Chiefs 20 Skins 17

Fantasy Thoughts:

Cassell warrants his first fantasy start this week, making Dwayne Bowe a surprise starter. Charles is a sleeper at RB. Cooley is the only player worth starting this week for the reeling Skins.

Rams @ Jags:

Not sure what to expect from this game. The Jags were blanked last week and the Lams are bad. Many are (many smarter than I am) projecting a Ram upset this week, but Gerard, MJD and Jack Del Rio have too much pride for that. The Rams will put up a fight, but the Jags will control the clock with Maurice Drew to get the Jags back on track.

Rams 14 Titans 28

Fantasy Thoughts:

Gerard and Maurice Drew are starters. Sims-Walker was benched for last week’s game after breaking curfew. I hope she was worth it. He will return this week to help the Jags passing game giving MJD more room. Any defense playing the Rams is a starter. Steven Jackson is the only potential starter for the Rams, but look for the rams to fall behind early and abandon the run.

Broncos @ Chargers:

I will get his out of the way up front. I am a Chargers fan. Always have been always will be. Therefore, there is an element of bias when it comes to the Bolts. As I mentioned earlier, there is an element of luck involved in the Broncos 5 – 0 start. Moreno is a waiting to claim rookie of year honors, Marshall appears happy again which means no double coverage for Eddie Royal. The weak link is at QB. Orton is a game manager. He will not win you any games. He will do his best to not loose the game, but he is not a starting fantasy QB. The Broncos D is impressive and opportunistic. The Chargers are a disappointment. Yes the loss of Jamal Williams is devastating, however there is enough talent on the defense to pick up the slack. I look for the secondary to have success against Orton. The Chargers are a passing team. As much as I hate to admit it, LT’s injuries may be too much for the hall of fame RB. He will get back on track this season, but not against the Bronco’s defense. Minimizing the demise of LT, is the rise of Rivers and Vincent Jackson. Rivers arguably has the best deep ball in football. Jackson has TE size with WR speed and hands. A perfect end zone target. The passing game will be too much for the D and the Chargers will had the Broncos their first loss of the year.

Broncos 2o Chargers 34

Fantasy Thoughts:

Rivers, Jackson and Gates are must starts this week. Moreno and Marshall are starts on the evil, sorry, Broncos side of the ball with Royal being a potential sleeper. Keading and Pater are starters in the kicking game, swapping a few long field goals. After couple of quiet weeks, Sproles is a sleeper in the return game.

Those are my thoughts on week 6. As much as I enjoy this, a comment or two to spur me along would not hurt.

Last week I took my first stab at predicting the results of a typical week in the NFL. I must admit that I was somewhat humbled, however the blame must be shared. A Buffalo Bill team that decides to leave it back in Lakawanna for a divisional match up against the fair weather fish? A Titans Team that is longing for a “Younger” QB? I am not pointing fingers, but the teams really do have to play along. I am batting 500. the scores may have been a little off, but this is why I don’t play Pro-line.

Here my thoughts for week 5.

Bengals @ Ravens:

The Bengals much improved defense is one of the surprises of 2009. It took time, but it looks like Marvin Lewis is finally leaving his stamp. However, the Ravens are coming off of a loss to Pats, that for intents and purposes they should have won. The Raven outplayed the Pats in every aspect of the game but a few dropped balls and Brady pleas for flags and you find yourself in the loss column. The Ravens defense is too much for the Bengals ground game and the Ravens offense seems unstoppable.

Bengals 10 Ravens 24

Fantasy Thoughts:

The Pats game was a test for Flaco and he passed with flying colours. He is not a must start each week, regardless of the opponent. Mcgahee continues to find the end zone and Ray Rice collects the yards. I would stay away from any Bengals this week, unless you have bye shortages.

Browns @ Bills:

Although Braylon Edwards did not catch ball in last weeks overtime loss(thats 90 mins without even catching a cold), he still created room for Massaquoi and the running game. Edwards is not wearing Jets green and Chansi Stuckey will not draw many double teams, yet. This is a good trade for the Browns. The Jets get a troubles former first round pick, who in his 5th year, has produced one good season. I hate saying it after they let me down, but the Bills are better than they are playing. Unfortunately it may take a coaching change for them to realize it.

Browns 7 Bills 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

I think this is a break-out game for Owens. If not, I pity the fans in Cheektowaga. Lynch should return to form after his suspension and Edwards is a good bye week option. Without any offensive weapons, stay away from any Browns.

Redskins @ Panthers:

Here’s hoping the bye was friendly to the Panthers, and Steve Smith’s temper. The Redskins are a god tonic to a winless team. Look for Delhomme and Smith to get back on track to take away some of those 8 man fronts for the running game. The Redskins squeaked out a win against the Yukaneers, but did not look strong doing so.

Redskins 17 Panthers 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

Steve Smith will find the end zone this week, but I don’t think the turnovers are behind Delhomme. If you need a bye week QB, Delhomme is the answer, but otherwise stay away. Clinton Portis looks like a 33 year old back. I thinks the miles are catching up. If you own Portis see if there is trade value before it is too late. Moss had a good week 4, but with Campbell tossing the pig skin, look elsewhere.

Steelers @ Lions:

Big Ben is no longer a game manager. He is now a top fantasy QB. It took the lack of a running game to bring it out, but for those of us that were mocked by drafting Ben early (present company included) , we can take credit for having the inside track, or a horseshoe in an uncomfortable place. Medenhall will solidify himself as the feature back this week and give the Steelers balance. Stafford or no Stafford, the Lions are in over their head in this game.

Steeler 34 Lions 10

Fantasy Thoughts:

The Banquet Berger (formerly Cheese Berger) is a top start each week. Mendenhall should find the end zone and Holmes should have his second 100 yards game of the season. Regardless of the QB, Calvin Johnson should get some catches as the Lions will fall behind early. Watch the injury status on Johnson.

Cowboys @ Chiefs:

The Cowboy’s made the Bronco’s look good last week. Not to take anything away from the Bronco’s defense, but with Romo throwing passes that a 6’7” WR could not catch, the Bronco’s were set up to win the game. The Cowboy’s running game should have success against the Chiefs and the anemic offense will not pose much of a challenge for the Boys D.

Cowboys 24 Chiefs 10

Fantasy Thoughts:

Romo is a bye week starter if you need one, but there are better options out there. Barber and Choice should continue to have success until Jones returns from injury. Like Romo Cassell is a bye week starter, collecting garbage points with the Boys taking an early lead. Bowe is a sleeper this week.

Raiders @ Giants:

Plantar Faciatis. I have had it following a summer of wearing, dare I say it, don’t judge me, sandals. Women that wear high heels are prone to the injury. An NFL QB that is questionable as a result. Interesting. We may have the fist cross dressing, Super Bowl winning, Pro Bowl QB on our hands. Whether Manning or Carr plays, the Giants running game and underrated defense is too much for the Raiders.

Raider 3 Giants 34

Fantasy Thoughts:

Watch for the pumps, sorry, injury status on Manning. He is plays, start him. Bradshaw continues to outplay Jacobs, although both are start are the Giants are expected to run out the clock. Steve Smith is a risk this week against an underrated Raiders secondary. The Giants Defense is a must start with the potential for a shot out. As I mentioned last week, starting any Raiders this year means you should really pay more attention to the baseball playoffs (as exciting as they are. Really. 182 games and you need a playoff)

Yukaneers @ Eagles:

The Eagles are not only coming off of a bye, but they get Mcnabb back as well. Watch Mcnabb early, any miscues and the friendly Philly fans will be craving Corn on the Kolb. Tampa is rebuilding and is overmatched at Philly. the Philly D will have a filed day with a young Josh Johnson, who played well in his first start in week 4.

Tampa 6 Eagles 34

Fantasy Thoughts:

Mcnabb, De Sean Jackson and the Philly D are must starts. With the game out of hand early look for Leshon Mccoy to get his chances. He is a great bye week starter. Mccoy is coming close to replacing Westbook outright. Yards per carry are the same and Mccoy has found the end zone, something that has evaded Westbrook. Stay away from any Bucs this week. I like Johnson, but not this week.

Vikings @ Rams:

The Lams may be the first team to go scoreless in two consecutive weeks. Farve is improving each week, Petersen is Petersen and the Vikings Defense is smothering.

Vikings 42 Rams 0

Fantasy Thoughts:

Farve, Petersen and the Vikings D are starters. Farve is spreading ball around a but much to trust any Vikings WRs. Look for Percy Harvin to be a good sleeper pick in leagues that score for return yards.

Falcons @ 49ers:

This is shaping up to be the game of the week. Singletary has the 49ers playing solid defense that is feeding off of turn overs. Turner has been bottle up for the most part, but the Falcons have more balance this year. Look for a close one to be decided by a long drive and a late field goal.

Falcons 10 49ers 13

Fantasy Thoughts:

Either kicker may be start in leagues that allow bonus point for long field goals. The 49ers D will force a few turnovers and may even score again this week. Coffee is a sleeper in his second game as the 49ers will attempt to run out the clock with a lead.

Texans @ Cards:

This game should be a shootout with the team holding the ball last, taking the game. this game showcases three of the top WR in the game and it should be an aerial show. Defense is a four letter word on either team. The difference will be the running to Steve Slaton who is starting to find his legs after a slow start.

Texans 24 Cards 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

Warner, Fitzgerald, Boldin (will find the end zone this week) Schuab, Johnson and Slaton are must starts. I mentioned Jacoby Jones last week and I stick by it. He puts the Texans in good fields position in the return games and is an option in a log passing game.

Pats @ Broncos:

It is not a fair world when the Bronco’s go undefeated and the Ravens sit at 3 and 1. The Broncos are playing well but they will not find any luck in this game. The Pats are improving and are coming off of a huge win. Brady and will be too much for the Broncos and Orton cannot be trusted to lead a game winning drive.

Pats 28 Broncos 14

Fantasy Thoughts:

Brady, Moss and Welker are must starts each week. Brandon Marshall seems to have come to terms with the coaching staff and is due for a big game. He may find it against a young Pats secondary. Moreno is a sleeper based on his potential alone. he will have a break-out game and this may be the week.

Jags @ Seahawks:

What Gerard is going to show up? The 150 yards version or the 300 yard one? Your guess is as good as mine. MJD was quiet last week but look for him to control the clock against a weak Seahawks defense. Hasselback should return this week and give the Seahawks some life. The difference in this game will be the Jags run game versus the non-existent Seattle run game.

Jags 24 Ravens 21

Fantasy Thoughts:

Gerard and Jones-Drew are starters this week. Sims-Walker has been a popular waiver pick-up this week, however look for the Jags to stick with the run as they try to keep pace with the Colts. If he can go, Hasselback is a start with Burleson continue to collect the yards. Like many people I am waiting for Houshmandzadeh be contribute. This may be the week. Stay away from the Seahawks RBs.

Colts @ Titans:

Don’t underestimate the impact of an easy schedule. The Colts are impressive, but remember this is the same team that should have lost to the Fish, if they had a QB. The Titans are a mystery. They have all of the pieces, but cannot pull it together. This is a must will game if the Titans want to keep pace with the Colts and Jags. Unfortunately the Colts are just too much for a soft defense. If the Titans can pressure Manning they stand a fighting chance. If not, expect to see Vince Young early in the second half and possible for the remainder of the season.

Colts 34 Titans 20

Fantasy Thoughts:

There is no QB playing better than Manning. His refusal to leave a game or run out the clock, borderline on poor sportsmanship, but it is gravy for Fantasy owners. Wayne and Clark are starts with Garson a sleeper is the game gets out of hand early. You cannot sit Chris Johnson and Kenny Britt is a sleeper in garbage yards as the Titans are likely to play from behind.

Jets @ Dolphins:

Can Sanchez recover from the game that reminded him that he is a rookie? The Dolphins defense is solid and the running game helps control the clock. Henne did nothing to remind us of Montana last week, but he played mistake free ball and let the running game do its job. I think this game will be decided by whichever defense plays the best. I give the edge to the Jets.

Jets 17 Dolphons 14

Fantasy Thoughts:

Ronnie Brown is a solid start and Jerricho Cotchery on the Jets side of the ball. Cothery is quietly turning in a pro bowl season. He is currently 6th in yards and 9th in receptions. The addition of Edwards will only make Cotchery better. Edwards is a better decoy than WR, but he will take double teams away from the better Cotchery. Sanchez is a bye week start, but avoid Henne, unless you are desperate, like me.

That about does it for my second blog. Have a read and feel free to comment, just be nice.

With 3 weeks in the books we are starting to see the true play off contenders and the potential teams for CFL expansion. More importantly, we are also starting to see how the Fantasy Football season is shaping up. Some of us are now draft clairvoyants, others are short bus managers.

Here are my thoughts on Week 4…

Jets @ New Orleans

The Jets have clearly been the Cinderella team of the early season. However, you have to look at the schedule and the sluggishness of early season teams when considering the Jets as potential division winner. The Jets face their first real test at New Orleans in a battle of the undefeated teams.

Look for Rex Ryan to send multiple blitz packages at Drew Brees in an attempt to keep him out of the endzone. The Bills managed to do this in week 3, however, the Bills’ swiss cheese of a run defense was their ultimate demise. The Jets will fare better, but I see a late New Orleans field goal and a Mark Sanchez schooling in game winning drives moving the Aints (sorry, the best mock team name ever) to 4 – 0.

Jets 17 Saints 14

Fantasy players to watch:

Jerricho Cothery, Colston and Brees should be solid fantasy starts. I would stay away from either running game and the usually solid Jets defense.

Lions @ Bears

I am not sold on Cutler, either in Denver or with the Bears. Other then Farve, the gunslinger mentality does not work. You generally have to know where you are throwing the ball. In Cutler’s case, you also need someone to throw the ball to. The Lions are on a high after a well deserved win and the defense is playing better than most would expect and they are moving the ball. I think the Lions are flying under the radar and this is a divisional grudge match. I see Calvin Johnson being the deciding factor.

Lions 21 Bears 17

Fantasy players to watch:

Calvin Johnson will have his first 100 yards multiple TD game of the season. Forte will get back on track and find the end zone, but Cutler will struggle with a multiple turnover game. Even if Kevin Smith plays, the Lions will struggle to run the ball and will be forced to beat the Bears through the air. Stafford is a fantasy sleeper this week.

Bengals @ Browns

Anderson takes over at QB, but unfortunately faces a divisional match up against an oddly solid defense. Bengals and defense just does not sound right. There is nothing positive about the Browns. What historically has been a shoot out, will be a slow defensive game based on solid running by Cedric Bensen.

Bengals 21 Browns 9

Fantasy players to watch:

Bensen is a must start with a potential 150 yards 2 TD game. Chad Johnson ( I refuse to use Ocho Cinco. Parents give thought into names. We should stick with them. I am sure Mrs. Johnson is not stitching Ocho Cinco into Chad’s underwear.), should be a solid start, but is not likely to find the end zone.

Cowboys @ Broncos

See Cutler comment regarding gun slingers. The Cowboy wideouts have taken some undue criticism. It is hard to catch a lame duck, and that is all Romo seems to be throwing these days. Now Romo gets to face Champ Bailey who should have a field day with Romo throwing passes right between the numbers, of the opposite team. This will be the breakout game for Knowshon Moreno. He is getting healthy and has led the Broncos in touches this season and should find the end zone a few time in this game.

Cowboys 17 Broncos 24

Fantasy players to watch:

Moreno will be a must start for the remainder of the season. No other Bronco is worthy of mentioning. Romo will continue to struggle, however, look for Barber to get the start and carry the load for the Cowboys. Tashard Choice is a fantasy sleeper following a solid performance against the Panthers.

Bills @ Dolphins

Prior to Pennington going down with a broken wing, this has potential to be a classic Dolphins vs Bills match up. However, throwing Henne to a frustrated Bills defense coming off of a game that held Brees out of the end zone, means a long day for the Fish. The key to Miami’s success is the wildcat. I am not confident Henne can mange the wildcat and Ronnie Brown cannot line up at QB for 60 mins. Look for the Bills to launch their two headed monster of a rushing attack and free up TO to find the end zone in this game.

Bills 30 Dolphins 6

Fantasy players to watch:

Lynch in his first game following suspension, will be introduced to term the fantasy owners hate. Splitting carries. Like all RB splitting time, start them only in situational games. Owens is a start this week with a 2 TD game with Edwards as a sleeper QB with the potential for a 300 yard game. A rarity for the Bills these days.

Giants @ Chiefs

Not much to say here. Arguably the best team in the league facing one of the worst. This game will be over at the half, which means it will be the only game broadcasted on local TV. Plan to mow the lawn.

Giants 42 Chiefs 3

Fantasy players to watch:

Start Manning, Steve Smith, Manningham, and the Giants defense. Bradshaw is starting to look like the better all round RB over Jacobs. Hard to think of a 260 lbs back reluctant to hit the hole, but Jacobs appears to be dancing more than running. I see Bradshaw as sleeper this week.

Ravens @ Pats

This will be a great game. Flaco is looking like a top 5 QB, the running game is solid. On the other side of the ball, the Pats defense is improving and putting the ball in the hands of Brady and Moss is always dangerous. This will be a classic slugfest. I see Flaco showing a kink in the armour this week and late Brady drive to move the Pats to 3 – 1.

Ravens 14 Pats 17

Fantasy players to watch:

Brady and Moss are the a must start. Watch for Welker’s injury status on game day. If he plays, he is a start. I would sit Flaco this week but look for Mcgahee to find the end zone again this week. The Ravens defense is a start each week.

Seattle @ Colts

See Giants vs Chiefs. Nothing much to say here. If Hasselback starts or not the Seahawks will struggle against the Colts’ passing game and a newly found running game. Donald Brown takes over for Addai this week to give the Colts a running game that they have not had since their Superbowl run. A shame for Addai fantasy owners.

Colts 42 Seattle 10

Fantasy players to watch:

Manning, Wayne and Clark are starts with sleeper potential for Garcon and Brown. No starts for the Seahawks.

Chargers @ Steelers

The Steelers own the Chargers at Three Rivers. However, I see that changing this week. Rivers is quietly having another pro bowl season. Look for the Chargers passing game to have success without Polomalu in the line up and the return of LT to put the Chargers over the top in the close one.

Chargers 23 Steelers 20

Fantasy players to watch:

Rivers and Jackson are must starts. LT is not there yet, but given time to heal, he will return to fantasy prominence. The lack of a running game makes Roethlisberger solid fantasy QB. Holmes was slowed down in week 2, but look for him to find the end zone against a questionable Chargers secondary. Stay away from any Steelers RB and Sproles this week.

Rams @ 49ers

The 49ers defense is underrated. The Rams found some offense under Boller last week, but it is looking like Bulger will be back. Not the best solution for the Rams. Gore went down in week 3, but look for Coffee to deliver on the promise that he showed in the pre-season. Look for this be a low scoring game, but the 49er defense will be too much for the struggling Rams.

49ers 17 Rams 3

Fantasy players to watch:

Coffee will be welcomed to the fantasy world in week 4 and Vernon Davis will solidfy himself as a top end zone target. The 49ers defense is a must start this week, with nothing to speak on the Lams (second best mock team name).

Bucks @ Redskins

This game has upset written all over it. With Josh Johnson making his first start the expectation is that he will struggle, even against Washington. I disagree. Johnson will remind us of a young Michael Vick and will leave the Redskins defense gasping for air. He may not stay in the pocket for too long but he will do enough to win. Look for the return of Antonio Bryant to help Johnson and the Tampa run game this week. Washington will continue to struggle and Jim Zorn should start to check out the want ads.

Bucs 20 Redskins 10

Fantasy players to watch:

Although I like Johnson, I would only start him if you are in bye or injury trouble. He is a sleeper, but don’t expect too much fantasy-wise. The Bucks’ three-headed running attack should be avoided. Stay away from any Redskin and see what trade value Portis has before it gets worse.

Raiders @ Texans

Unfortunately for the Raiders, the Texans get to take out their frustration on Russel and company. The Texans can score with any team in the league, however, the running game has been absent with Slaton suffering from the dreaded sophomore slump. Sorry to those of you that drafted Slaton in the first few rounds. It is going to be a long season. At some point the Raiders have to move away from Russell. They have the running game, offensive line and defense, but without the QB to manage the game, you should be considering Tim Teabow in the draft.

Texans 34 Raiders 14

Fantasy players to watch:

Schaub and Johnson are a must start. Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones are sleepers. Jones is a monster in the return game and is turning into Schaub’s 3 catch 120 yard deep threat. I don’t envision starting any Raider at all this year. Unless you want to prove to your buddies that you know something they don’t. If this is the case, you will only look silly.

Titans @ Jags

Talk about a team wanting to take some frustration out on someone. The Titans are o and 3, but not the Lams type of 0 and 3. Close game against the Steeler and Jets, give the Titans something to prove as they slide down the division rankings. To keep pace with the Colt’s the Titans need this game. MJD will put up a fight but it will not be enough.

Titans 24 Jags 14

Fantasy players to watch:

Collins is a pedestrian fantasy player. If you need a QB, start him, but other wise look elsewhere. Johnson will get back on track and White will resume his role as the goal line back. Unfortuately dues the success of the running game, Titans WRs don’t warrant much fantasy consideration. MJD is a start every week but that is about it. Gerrard has fantasy potential, but not against and angry Jeff Fisher defense.

Packers @ Vikings

There is much talk about the Rodgers versus Farve showdown, but the real game is between the Packers passing game and the Vikings pass rush and secondary. The Vikings stole one last week thanks to Farve, but don’t expect a repeat this week. The Packer have been toying with dominance and I look for them to show some of that this week. With the run game a non factor, look for Rodgers and his WRs to last against the Vikings D. I think the Cheese Heads can contain Petersen, much like the 49ers did last week and will be able to put the ball in Rodgers hands for a game winning drive.

Packers 27 Vikings 24

Fantasy players to watch:

Rodgers, Jennings and Driver are starters for the Pack. Driver has quietly outplayed Jennings this year. Jermichael Finley is a sleeper this week with Rodgers looking to through the ball to anyone that is willing to catch it. The TE is as replaced Donald Lee as an outlet in the passing game. Although you probably draft Grant high, he has not played well and is will not fare much better against the Vikings defence. AP is a must start with Farve as a potential bye week filler. Viking WRs are too inconsistent to consider starting. Greg Lewis caught the winning TD past last week. May be his last this season. Don’t expect many 300 yard game from Farve this year. If you are going to sit the Viking defense, this is the week.

Those are my thoughts and predictions for week 4. Check back next week to see how terribly wrong I may be and to see if I have changed my focus to the NHL.
